Since that day, over 1,000 people have been imprisoned without being charged for a crime, let alone tried or convicted. Documentary Film: "The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil."

Thursday, January 11, as part of the Sustainable Tompkins monthly gathering and sponsored, in part, by Tompkins County Relocalization Project (TCLocal), Prepared Tompkins, and the Cuba Friendship Group of Greater Ithaca. The gathering will begin at 6:00 pm with a potluck dinner at GIAC, 318 N. Albany Street, Ithaca.

About the film and gathering: Petroleum industry experts agree that global oil production will reach a peak and then begin an irreversible decline some time in the next 20 years, with profound implications for our way of life and even our food supply. Cuba got an unwilling preview of the future when oil imports collapsed with the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. This story of Cuba's successful management of energy descent through permaculture provides an eye-opening look at the challenges facing us, the solutions provided by a transition to organic farming, and the social changes wrought by a return to local food production. Discussion will follow film.

YOUR LETTERS

Send Snail Mail Letters to Congress

Thanks for the news!  I'm writing to urge others to send "real mail" letters (the most effective) to members and leaders in the new Congress—Clinton, Schumer, your Congressperson, Pelosi, Harry Reid, etc.—as soon as possible, urging them to take action on the issues for which they were elected.

My own priorities: NO MORE FUNDS FOR THE WAR (Which does support the troops by getting them out of harm's way) and RESTORATION OF THE CONSTITUTION/CIVIL LIBERTIES. I think and will say that while I do not believe impeachment is feasible at present, I think it ought not to be taken off the table prior to investigations - otherwise the megalomania can continue unobstructed. Our congress people need to hear from us how strongly we feel (if we do)!

Thanks,

---Joyce Kantor
