Note to readers and the larger Ithaca community,
Last week, I ran a few paragraphs mentioning the death of former District Attorney George Dentes, and unfortunately made a grave error in judgment in how I reported his death, by presenting it in the context of just one of his many cases. Several readers wrote to express their dismay over this (some of them have allowed me to publish their letters). In light of their observations, I can now see where I went wrong, and I am truly sorry for the thoughtless and careless way I reported his passing. I'm sorry if my reporting hurt anyone, especially his family and close friends. Please accept my apologies.

White Pines Saved! Last week, ICN ran an action alert on behalf of ecological forester Mike DeMunn, inviting readers to call the Finger Lakes National Forest and asking them to save a strand of old growth white pines. That same day, Finger Lakes National Forest District Ranger Mike Liu announced he is excluding the pines from the "Cotton Mill" sale. Tony Ingraham has posted Liu's statement here.

ITHACA WAR AND PEACE REPORT
************************************************************
Welcome to Fascism, US-style, in passage of the John Warner Defense Authorization Act.
from Felix Teitelbaum, Managing Editor of GreenLeaf:
It appears the Washington Post (nor any other major media) has not given this horrifying new provision any attention. A quick Google News search found only 39 references with the Huffington Post and the John Birch Society leading the list.
If you are unfamiliar with this issue, below are a few excerpts from the story found at http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0610/S00490.htm
"In a stealth maneuver, President Bush has signed into law a provision which, according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law (1)."
"...allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to 'suppress public disorder.'"
"The law also facilitates militarized police round-ups and detention of protesters, so called 'illegal aliens,' 'potential terrorists' and other 'undesirables' for detention in facilities already contracted for and under construction by Halliburton. That's right. Under the cover of a trumped-up 'immigration emergency' and the frenzied militarization of the southern border, detention camps are being constructed right under our noses, camps designed for anyone who resists the foreign and domestic agenda of the Bush administration."

In response to allegations of abuse and torture, at U.S. Military Prison Guantanimo Bay, Cuba, along with the recent suspension of habeas corpus for non U.S citizens picked up in the so-called war on terror, a group of local citizens is organizing a reading of the play, "Guantanimo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom." The play is based on the lives of three young British Muslim men released from Guantanimo after four years of abuse and torture.
The rehearsal schedule has just begun, but it's not too late to get involved! Actors are still needed, as are technical support. For a complete rehearsal schedule, call or email Mary Anne Grady Flores, 273-7437, mgrady@lightlink.com.
Performances will be held Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, in the GIAC Gym at 7:00 pm.
For more information about the play, or the issues involved, check out the Center for Constitutional Rights: http://www.ccr-ny.org/v2/gac/grp/.

"Sir, No Sir!" Screening and Discussion: Saturday, November 11, Unitarian Church (corner of Aurora and Buffalo Streets), downtown Ithaca, 7:30 pm. "Sir! No Sir!" reveals the untold story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam. This is the story of one of the most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the 1960s--one that had a profound impact on American society, yet has been virtually obliterated from the collective memory of that time. An open discussion will follow the 90-minute screening. Donations are welcome; all proceeds will benefit health care for veterans. Co-sponsored by the Ithaca Unitarian Social Justice Council and the Durland

Snow shovelers needed to assist seniors. With winter coming upon us, the Tompkins County Office for the Aging is updating its listing of snow shovelers. Deep snow and icy sidewalks are dangerous for everyone but especially for senior citizens. Many seniors are not able to remove the snow from their sidewalks without assistance. If you are interested in assisting seniors by shoveling or plowing, on either a paid or volunteer basis, please call the Tompkins County, Office for the Aging at 274-5482.

From the folks at Fall Creek Pictures/Cinemapolis: THIS WEEK'S *7TH ART SELECTS* INFAMOUS ENDS Thursday, November 9. We'd like to call your attention to INFAMOUS—a film that's not getting the attention it deserves because it has the bad luck to share subject matter with last year's justly praised "Capote." Don't pass up INFAMOUS just because you're a fan of "Capote"—seeing INFAMOUS gives a rare chance to see how much difference there can be between two intelligent interpretations of the same material. We loved "Capote"—but find INFAMOUS to be the gutsier, more emotional film with a whole new set of excellent performances. Daniel Craig's explosive Perry deserves particular praise. INFAMOUS plays at Fall Creek through Nov. 9.

YOUR LETTERS
************************************************************
Dear Ms. Bauchner,
I received this week's copy of ICN and must admit that I was taken aback by the report on the death of George Dentes. My husband and I lived in Ithaca for 29 years and have moved to PA a little over a year ago. We shared most if not all of the views expressed in your publication and have long been actively involved in several causes such as Gay Rights and Advocacy as well as Anti-War issues. I must admit that I was saddened to read how you summed up the importance of Mr. Dentes' life by pointing out the one case which may have been the most objectionable to you. I also did not agree with the handling of the SP4 on any level, but I cannot feel comfortable with an unkind, dismissive "obituary" for any fellow human being who has died so young and certainly left a grieving family. After all, is not the "Peace Movement" all about the value of all people? One has only to look at the incredible show of forgiveness and love shown by the Amish in the face of unspeakable tragedy and loss, to be reminded of what we CAN be. I, for one, found the item mean-spirited and unnecessarily unpleasant.

Dear Elizabeth,
God knows that running a periodical of any kind is hard work. I have great respect for Ithaca Community News and for you, and I also have respect for the St. Patrick's Four, for their dedication to an ideal, to faith in the longstanding traditions and power of civil disobedience in this country, and for their commitment in sticking by their ideals. However, I felt bad about the remarks ICN offered on the passing of former District Attorney George Dentes. As a friend of mine once said, death is big. The brief chance we have to mark that final milestone in someone's life is an occasion for balance and careful comment. Whether I agree with the stances George Dentes took or not, I found the ICN remarks hasty and inappropriate, and the coupling of his death with the case history of the St. Patrick's Four, as though that was all he'd ever done, ill-timed with an unfortunate opportunistic tone.
