Do you like to read your news online, perhaps at alternative news sites like ICN? How would you feel if big cable and phone companies were allowed to decide which web sites open easily, and which ones don't? According to http://www.SaveTheInternet.com, Net Neutrality is still at risk. In June, the House passed legislation that guts Net Neutrality. The Senate now needs to vote on the issue. Senator Schumer has come out in *favor* of Net Neutrality. Follow progress here: http://www.savetheinternet.com/blog/.

Public forum regarding the 2007 Tompkins County Budget, Thursday, September 21, 7:00 pm, Greater Ithaca Activities Center (gym), 318 N. Albany Street, Ithaca. This public information meeting is held to receive public input on the tentative budget as Legislators are in the process of their deliberations as an Expanded Budget Committee. This meeting will take place before any votes are taken on the budget.
As for where the budget stands now, County Administrator Stephen Whicher delivered to the Legislature his Tentative Budget on September 5, a package containing nearly $70 million in local spending. The budget meets the Legislature's goal of holding the tax rate steady, but the Administrator does not recommend adoption because of the severe program cuts that were needed to reach that goal, including library cuts and more. On September 11, agency representatives and department heads told County Legislators that budget reductions contained in Tompkins County’s tentative 2007 budget would eliminate valuable programs, reduce outside funding support, and could put some agencies out of business, such as Lifelong, which has a proposed cut of $48,000. Some youth programs also face cuts of nearly $100,000, which would affect youth homeless and anti-violence programs.

New web site: FINGER LAKES BUY GREEN http://www.fingerlakesbuygreen.org, a service of the Tompkins County Solid Waste Division and Sustainable Tompkins. From an email to ICN:
"We are excited to be able to provide this useful resource to residents of the Finger Lakes region. Right now we have information and advice as to where to purchase a selection of environmentally preferable office supplies locally. We are currently compiling a directory of cleaning and janitorial supplies which should be available by end October. That will be followed by repairs and maintenance, and early next year by yard and garden."
Editor's note: They've done all the research for you on what makes a product "green" so you don't have to. I clicked through the site to figure out how to use it, and it's easy and will be a great resource. When you click through the site, if you find something you want to purchase, just check "wish list" and when you are finished browsing, the web site will generate a shopping list for you with all the local stores where you can get your environmentally preferable office products (with the other categories coming soon).
