Green Guerrillas "Blockumentary" Media Project Screening Event, September 8, Ithaca Commons Amphitheater, 8:00 pm (Rain location Henry Saint John building corner of Geneva and ClintonStreets). The “Green Guerrillas” are local young people who knew relatively nothing about digital media, green building, organic food, or renewable energy at the start of the summer. Through twenty hours per week of hands-on instruction, the Green Guerrillas learned how to use computer and video technology to build entreprenurial job skills, create a "Blockumentary" about important local issues, convert a diesel engine to run on vegetable oil, and make a music video for a local hip hop group. The Blockumentary features local applications of green building and renewable energy technologies, and also adds another perspective to th local efforts to re-name State Street after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All ages, FREE. The Ultimate in climate misinformation, from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, an organization funded by ExxonMobil, Amoco, Texaco, the American Petroleum Institute, and other folks who have been telling us that global warming doesn't exist. In May, they released two 60-second television spots, which were aired in fourteen cities just before 'An Inconvenient Truth' came out. These ads tell us that carbon dioxide is just "life." While watching happy families pile into their cars, you get the warm, fuzzy feeling that everything is just goingto be all right. "They call it pollution," the narrator says. "We call it life."

Two Non Violent Communication workshops September 16 and 17. CRESP is hosting these workshops, which are open to the public for a suggested donation of $30/day. The Saturday workshop is an introduction to NVC, for newcomers to the process. The Sunday workshop is for those wishing to deepen their NVC skills. Non-violent communication is a way of communicating without criticism and blame. It is a process that fosters honesty, mutual respect and productive exchanges. From these workshops you will build skills to handle conflict, emotional intensity, and tension effectively. You will learn to speak your own truth in such a way that creates collaboration rather than polarization. You will learn to listen to others in such a way that leaves them feeling heard. Workshop leader, Duke Duchscherer, is a Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication who has spent seven years intensively learning, living and teaching the life-connected process that is NVC. His experience teaching NVC ranges from traveling with Marshall Rosenberg in Hungary & Croatia, teaching NVC in war-torn Sri Lanka & Nigeria, to deep personal work to develop a more gentle and kind relationship with himself. Sign up for one or both of these valuable workshops by contacting Anke Wessels of CRESP, akw7@cornell.edu, or 255-5027. Space is limited. More info on NVC: http://www.cnvc.org.

The fourth annual "Out of the Closet and onto the Screen" film series will begin at Ithaca College August 31, with a showing of "Gay Pioneers." The film chronicles the first gay civil rights demonstrations held in major East Coast cities in the late 1960s. The screening will begin at 7:30 pm in Textor 101. Sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, the film series this year will focus on the theme of heroes and history of the LGBT movement. Because the history of LGBT people and movements is rarely taught, it is difficult for people--LBGT and non-LGBT alike--to learn about these fascinating yet sometimes lost stories. This year’s series will seek to fill in those gaps. The series will present a total of six films during the fall semester. Additional screenings will take place during the spring. All are free and open to the public.

Next film in the series, "Key West, City of Colors," September 7, 7:00 pm, Textor 103. Key West becomes the inspiration for the 25th anniversary of the original Rainbow Flag, a metaphor for the community and diversity. The 8,000-square-foot flag created for this event weighs 3 tons. More info on the series: Lis Maurer, LGBT center coordinator, 274-7394 or lmaurer@ithaca.edu.
