Editorial Mission

Paul Glover
Founder

Ithaca Community News was founded in 2000 by Paul Glover as a twice monthly email newsletter offering a little bit of everything that makes Ithaca unique: our activism, our arts, our history, our quirks. In Paul's clear and spirited voice, he advocated for peace instead of war, for bicycle use instead of driving, for cooperatives instead of multinational corporations. An Ithaca native, he also added a touch of fun, including in every newsletter interesting tidbits about Ithaca that no one else would think to write about, or even, possibly, to wonder about.

Paul left the area in August 2005, and has since asked me to take over the newsletter and web site. Since I started publishing ICN in November, 2005, I have incorporated it as a non-profit news service under the umbrella organization Social Ventures, Inc. I have also re-organized the structure of the newsletter, redesigned the web site, added writer's guidelines, hired occasional freelance writers, and developed an advertising policy.

Despite the many changes, it is my goal to continue the newsletter in the same spirit and with the same purpose that Paul established during the first five or so years of publication. To that end, I developed this editorial mission statement.

Ithaca Community News aims to support, educate and entertain area residents through email newsletters and web site articles that include, but are not limited to: events, labor news, health care news, peace activism, sustainability, education, and cooperative economic development.

Ithaca Community News endorses and supports environmental sustainability, organic and local agriculture, permaculture, renewable energy, cooperative and grassroots economic development, workers' rights, worker ownership, human rights, family planning, women's reproductive rights, trains and mass transit, bicycles, health care for all, and peace, diplomacy and nonviolence.

Elizabeth Field

Above all, Ithaca Community News advocates for community and all that it encompasses. With a current database listing of more than 8,000 subscribers, ICN welcomes announcements for all kinds of area events, and encourages healthy debate in the Letters section. ICN will promote local businesses who, in turn, support this editorial mission. Ithaca Community News will also promote public hearings and involvement in the political process.

Ithaca Community News respects the privacy of its subscribers. ICN will never sell or trade your email address or any other personal information collected in our database. Your emails to ICN will be read by a real person (me), and you can unsubscribe at any time. Easy unsubscribe instructions are included in every newsletter.

Thanks for your continued interest in and support of Ithaca Community News.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Field, Editor and Publisher 2005-2006
